Characteristics of Success - 'Life Skills' Part 18
Welcome back on a beautiful Friday; I hope you have had a great work week and getting ready for a wonderful weekend. We are continuing to explore 'Characteristics of Success' and over the last six weeks have been embarking on a series we have entitled: 'Life Skills'. We began this series on Friday, May 14th, and established that although the last 21 months or so have been very difficult for most businesses, a positive trend has emerged. This trend seems to be that more and more companies are making their 'Training & Development' focus: 'Work/Home Life Balance or Life Skills' type training.

The first nine traits or attributes we have explored in our previous posts were:

#1. 'Never Ever Stop Dreaming'

#2. 'Transparancy'

#3.  'Authenticity'

#4.
'Strength of Character'

#5. 'Face your Fears'

#6. 'Honesty'

#7. 'Life Choices'

#8. 'Faith'

#9. 'Life Purpose'

Alexander Graham Bell stated: 'When one door closes another one opens........ But we look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the one that has opened for us!' Today I would like to talk briefly another attribute or trait that I feel definitely needs to be included in our 'Life Skills' series and that trait is:

#10. 'Facing Life Transistions'

All of us continually throughout our life journeys have to 'Face Life Transitions'. When I speak of 'Life Transitions' let me give you some examples so we all have or share some common ground. 'Life Transitions' are:

* Going to school
* Graduating from high school
* Going to college
* Getting a full-time job and entering the working world
* Getting married
* Getting divorced
* Having children
* Children moving away
* A loved-one dying
* Caring for a sick family member
* Losing your job
* Children getting married

and the list goes on and on. Now when we look at 'Life's Transitions' some of you may say there is nothing you can do about them.....you just have to 'Face' them and keep going forward. In many ways you are correct, yet I believe many of us truly and deeply struggle during  these  times, whether it was expected or not. Why is that?

I think there are an endless amount of reasons why we struggle during times of transition/change and I want to list just a few off the top of my head:

* We are losing something.
* We are scared of the future.
* We don't want things to change.
* We 'Liked' things the way they were
* We were comfortable
* There is 'security' in the way it was......(Even in a 'bad' relationship.....there is still security involved....which is why people stay)
* We don't know 'how' to handle the change.
* We are sometimes angry or feel guilty about the change.
* We didn't necessarily want the change to happen.
* We let other people's opinions weigh on us during these times especially if the other people's opinions differ from ours.
* We can't picture what the 'future' state looks like and we wonder if we are 'equipped' to handle it.

Whatever the reason, or reasons we struggle working through and 'Facing Life's Transitions' let's be honest and realize that this process, and it is a process, can be very, very difficult. In fact most of know someone who really wasn't or hasn't been able to 'Face or Work through a Transition' they have had in their life. We all know someone who seems to be stuck and can't get a grip or their head around why things are different. They seem to continue to struggle with feelings of sadness, anger, hurt, guilt, bitterness or frustration and this struggle seems to always be ever-present in their emotional and logical minds.

I would like to bring today's discussion to a close by asking you to think about and contemplate the following questions

#1. Have you ever struggled with 'Facing a Transition' in your life? Be honest....Did you? Why, List all the reasons you can think of looking back at why you struggled so mightily with this change/transition? (Folks everyone of us has struggled mightily at times with a change we had to face in life....we have.......don't try and be 'Macho' and hide it...we have! Again please be honest and answer the question...peel back the onion!)

#2. Are you currently struggling 'Facing a Transition' in your life? Again, Please be honest....Why, Try and list ALL the reasons you may be struggling......list them all? (Peel back the onion....please realize this; Honesty is the best policy.......you're not fooling anyone and you know it.......just do your best to be honest and candid.....that is what 'Authentic' people do, This process helps us get our head around the transistion and why things are different.)

Over the next several posts I want to continue exploring 'Facing Life's Transitions' and delve into some practical thoughts/ideas we all can employ to not only survive the transition/change but to come out on the other side a different, deeper, better person.......remember life is not a race....you don't win......it is a journey.....YOU BECOME......What are YOU becoming? Tongue out

As I have shared in previous posts and which I feel applies here as well, one of the keys to being able to 'Face a Transition' is just being willing to be quiet and honestly wrestle with the above thoughts/questions. Take this weekend and re-visit these questions, write your answers down or list them on your computer. My friends there is power in answering these questions and writing the answers down and seeing them visually! Again, as I stated above......life is not a race......no one 'wins'.......but I will say.....it is a 'hoot' becoming......the ride and journey is so worth it....it is!

I'll
see you again on Monday and have a great weekend. As always, thanks for listening/reading and remember to:

'Dream Big and Dare to Fail!'

(Again I would love to hear what 'characteristics/skills/traits' you believe should be incorporated into the 'Life Skills' series. What do YOU think are key 'Life Skills' necessary to not only 'survive but thrive' in today's personal and professional world? Characteristics of Success - 'Life Skills' Part 17
Welcome back on a rainey Wednesday in the Adirondack Mountains. I hope you are having a great week and experiencing 'success' both professionally and personally. We are continuing to explore 'Characteristics of Success' and over the last five weeks have been embarking on a series we have entitled: 'Life Skills'. We began this series on Friday, May 14th, and established that although the last 21 months or so have been very difficult for most businesses, a positive trend has emerged. This trend seems to be that more and more companies are making their 'Training & Development' focus: 'Work/Home Life Balance or Life Skills' type training.

The first eight traits or attributes we have explored in our previous posts were:

#1. 'Never Ever Stop Dreaming'

#2. 'Transparancy'

#3.  'Authenticity'

#4.
'Strength of Character'

#5. 'Face your Fears'

#6. 'Honesty'

#7. 'Life Choices'

#8. 'Faith'

#9. 'Life Purpose'

Today I would like to continue a discussion we started on Monday in response to a quote I posted on 'Holland Meads Consulting' page on Facebook. For those of you on Facebook I have a page for my business and each day and Monday's quote or a thought of the day was the following: Thinking is easy, ACTING is difficult, and to put one's thoughts into ACTION is the most difficult thing in the world.-Johann Wolfgang von Goethe '

After I posted this thought I received this question from Nnadozie (One of my 'fans/likes' on Facebook.) .......speaking about clarity dreams and visions, what do you see, feel or observe before coming into conclusion that this my purpose in life, out of the millions of thoughts that goes through your mind?
I responded with a brief answer on my Facebook page and also with a more detailed explanation in Monday's Blog and after giving the question some more thought I wanted to spend some more time today continuing to discus 'Life Purpose'.

As I alluded to on Monday I don't think there is a 'right or wrong' way to understand an individual's life purpose and dreams. Whether it is  revealed to you at an early age or you struggle with it for years before you make your own personal break through the key is 'Living Your True Life Purpose'.

As I shared, I have had many 'careers' and paths along my way that have lead me to where I am today and quite frankly I wouldn't change a thing. All of the choices and events in my life have helped to make me the person I am today. O have stated this often over the last year of writing: I have made more bad decisions and choices then most people should be allowed in one lifetime. However, I didn't start out to make 'bad' decisions/choices.....that was more of a hindsight observation. Each decision/choice has brought things into my life that have allowed me to grow and become and for that I am thankful.

Am I sad that my choices/decisions sometimes affected others negatively, both personally and professionally.....YES! Any hurt I have caused others I deeply regret and am sorry for but their hurt. The key to remember in this process was it wasn't intentional but more a result of trying to 'live MY life' true to my heart and dreams and to the best of my ability.

One of the thoughts that came to me over the last several days has to do with people like myself who have maybe meandered a little through life as opposed to taking a straight-line course.  For those of us that didn't know what our 'Life Purpose' was at age five and can't relate to having that kind of clarity of thought at that young of an age I offer today's thoughts.

When we talk about 'Life Purpose/Dreams',I feel one of the keys to finding and defining your 'Life Pupose' has to tie directly to your 'Heart' and what I would call your 'Passions'. Here is what I mean: I have shared that my career/life path has been a circuitous route to say the least. One of the things that has become very evident to me as I look back over my life and choices is a common 'theme' began to surface. The theme or connection between all my professional and personal decisions/choices had as the central idea, theme or premise; 'a passion for what I was doing'.

I think that statement is the 'Key' that unlocks the process of the 'HOW do I find my Life Purpose'. If you study people who are successful no matter what field they are in or what position they are in life I will promise you they share this characteristic: They have a PASSION for what they are doing! So I think that thought is a great barometer to gauge where you are currently on that path for yourself. Do you have a Passion for what you are doing or for that matter 'Who you are with'?

I really don't think you can 'manufacture' true passion. Yes can we all embrace something we have to do and maybe even get ourselves to the point of somewhat enjoying the task/person....absolutely......but I would NOT define that as a core passion. Obligation isn't a great motivator my friends.....obligation leads to more obligation. I know of many people who live their life by obligation and they know.....in their heart of hearts....they aren't happy. They appear 'Happy and Content' and put on a good show for friends and family but in those those quiet moments the still small voice speaks and when it does.......they don't like the answer.

They are stuck and scared to death to really embrace what is in the heart and soul. They make decisions everyday that deny what they truly want and feel and 'excuse' the choices to assuage their own guilt and heart. They are afraid of what other's may think, say and of them having to make a choice and stand up for the things that are deeply important to them. So instead of embracing their Passions' they bury them a little deeper hoping that someday 'all of their stars will align' and somehow miraculously they will be living their passion and dreams.

Unfortunately it doesn't turn out like that my friends.......obligation just digs a deeper trench until you are so deep, the energy and commitment to extricate yourselves seems overwhelming and almost impossible. When we continue to 'bury' that still small voice we forget to realize we concurrently inhibit and lessen our ability to understand and live our 'Life Purpose/Dreams'.

Now what does all this have to do with 'Life Purpose'? I think to understand our "Life Purpose/Dreams we have to be able to do the following:

* Understand our Passion(s).
* Listen to your Heart.
* Be quiet and let that 'Still Small Voice of Yours Speak'
* Stop being afraid!
* Take Action! NOW!
* It will not be a perfect flawless journey....you will hit some rapids......just hold on...you'll make it through.
* Don't look back....Commit to moving forward!
* Realize Life is a Journey!

I guess I would like all my readers to think about several thoughts as we close todays blog. As we have established, some people will know their 'Life Purpose' early on in life and will continue along that path for the rest of their life. Others, like myself, may meander a bit through life and then find their one true 'Life Pupose'. Yet I also believe this; some people may have several 'Life Purposes' throughout their life and these 'Purposes' may be very different from one another.....yet these purposes will share several common themes/bonds. The person will have a deep 'Passion' about the endeavor and, it will align with their 'Heart' and that 'Still Small Voice' that resonates from deep inside them.

Rascal Flatts has a song called 'The Broken Road' and one of the lines is: 'God Bless the Broken Road.......that lead me straight to you...' The lyrics of that song speak deep to my core as a person because I have travelled a 'Broken Road'. However that broken road I feel was me following my heart and soul......listening to that 'Still Small Voice' that was screaming from inside me. I truly feel that if you are willing  to ask enough tough personal and professional questions to peel the layers of the onion of 'your life'.....If you'll do that and get to 'YOUR  CORE' and then be bold enough to 'Face Your Fears' and 'What others may Say'.....If you'll do that and then just determine to take 'YOUR LEAP' of 'FAITH' I believe you will be able to find and live your true 'Life Purpose or Purposes' whichever the case may be.

Again, I think one of the keys.....is just being willing to be quiet and honestly wrestle with the above thoughts/questions and be willing to listen......just listen over and over again to your heart. If we can learn to be still and listen....we will all start to know and sense our 'Life Purpose or Purposes'. As you embark on this journey remember to step back and learn to embrace trait #8 above, learn to 'TRUST' and have
'Faith in God',
if you do, I believe you WILL become the person you were intended to be.

I hope this helped clarify my thoughts from Monday and I look forward to hearing your thoughts and comments. Please join me on Facebook at

Characteristics of Success - 'Life Skills' Part 16
Good afternoon on this fine Monday and I hope you had a good weekend and for those 'Fathers' out there; Happy Belated Father's Day! In our continuing exploration of 'Characteristics of Success', over the last five weeks we have been embarking on a series we have entitled: 'Life Skills'.

#8. 'Faith

#9 'Life Purpose'

I would like to spend today answering a question that was expressed in response to a quote I posted on 'Holland Meads Consulting' page on Facebook. For those of you on Facebook I have a page for my business and each day I post a quote or a thought of the day. Today's quote was the following: Thinking is easy, ACTING is difficult, and to put one's thoughts into ACTION is the most difficult thing in the world.-Johann Wolfgang von Goethe '

After I posted this thought I received this question from Nnadozie (One of my 'fans/likes' on Facebook.) H
i Holland! How do you really overcome the difficulty in acting on dreams' I responded with a brief answer on my Facebook page which was: 'I think there are several keys: Having a clear mental and emotional picture of your dreams, being able to see them clearly, controlling your thoughts & fears, surrounding yourself with people who support your dreams, making sure you continually take action, even taking small steps creates momentum and momentum drives you forward & NEVER, EVER QUIT! Thanks for asking, Holland

Nnadozie followed-up with another questions which was:
'Thanks! That's comprehensive, speaking about clarity dreams and visions, what do you see, feel or observe before coming into conclusion that this my purpose in life, out of the millions of thoughts that goes through your mind?

As I thought about the question I wanted to respond but I also knew I couldn't really explain 'my thoughts' on Facebook with the limited amount of characters it allows you so I wanted to respond on my blog. I know we have been talking about 'Key Life Skills' and what I'm about to discuss I think fits in perfectly and ties nicely into the 'Faith' aspect we discussed last week. I also think our discussion today will bring further clarity to our first aspect/trait we discussed which was: 'Never Ever Stop Dreaming'.

Now I know some of you are wondering if I am side-tracking in responding to this but not only do I NOT think we are side-tracking I think exploring some thoughts around the question above could be very helpful and enlightening. Let's give it a whirl by re-examining Nnadozie's question which was: speaking about clarity dreams and visions, what do you see, feel or observe before coming into conclusion that this my purpose in life, out of the millions of thoughts that goes through your mind?

As I attempt to answer the above question I have to share this disclaimer: Even trying to answer this question humbles me to my core. All I can promise is to give you my best thoughts/insights and hope you will gain something form this exchange. 'Life Purpose, Dreams, Career Choices' may be very interwoven and intertwined for some people and for others they may be completely disjointed. One isn't better than the other they are just different; just as we as individuals are all different and that my friends makes life interesting. As we have discussed in previous posts I have a life view that is framed by this paradigm: 'Life is not a race or a destination but a journey.' Knowing that premise I would like to share the following thoughts:

I believe 'Life Purpose' may be a very fluid process for most people. Some people, although I think very few, have 'Dreams' and a view of their 'Life Purpose' at a very early age and that 'purpose' doesn't change their whole life/career. I was recently on an airplane and was seated next to a pilot who was 'dead-heading' to work. We got talking and I asked him what type of aircraft he flies, etc. etc. I then ask him when he 'KNEW' he wanted to be in this industry. His answer surprised me when he said: 'I have wanted to fly and be a pilot since I was five years old. it is all I have ever wanted to do and every educational choice I made in my life was with the one 'destination' or gaol in mind.....to be a pilot. I have never ever wanted to do anything else and have been flying commercially for twenty years.'

Wow.......now folks you may disagree and that's OK......but in the twenty plus years I have been speaking to Corporate groups and with all the people in various industries I have met, this gentleman was the first person who ever shared that he KNEW what he wanted to do when he was FIVE YEARS OLD and that that dream/goal/pupose never changed! Now for most of the people reading this I bet you just took a big 'gulp' and went wow.......at five years old all I wanted was another slice of pie for dessert.....at least that's all I wanted at age five!

My point is this.......some people just KNOW......they feel in their heart-of-hearts that they were destined to do a specific thing and that area is revealed to them at whatever age and they pursue it with all their being. Others of us may take a more circuitous route to get to our 'Life Dreams/Purpose'.

I am more the latter then the former. I have worked in restaurants, hotels, wanted to be a professional basketball player after college, tried out with a semi-pro basketball team and got cut, worked as a professional photographer with my dad for five years, worked with Marriott and Franklin-Covey, etc....etc.......are you starting to get the picture.....(Smile)

Yet, if someone ask me right now do you know your 'Life Purpose/Dreams', I would say absolutely. My purpose is to simply 'Make a Difference in People's Lives through the Spoken and Written word! I want to 'plant shade trees' under which I know I will probably never sit!' The business and career I am in currently I will be in for the rest of my life. I will be 90 years old and still writing and speaking.......I feel deep down in my core I have found my 'Life Purpose or God's Will/Design for my Life'.....I sincerely mean that......I do and for that I am truly blessed.

Now with that said I look at the 30+ years I spent doing all that other stuff as not a waste but part of my journey that all needed to play out in my life.......the good, the bad, the ugly, the sad.......all of it was part of my journey. Do I sometimes look back at certain decisions and years later go.....'Opps that was a bad choice/decision'......Absolutely.....but I don't beat myself up about it. I try to realize what I have learned from these 'life' choices and apply them currently and in the future.

I will say this about 'Life Purpose/Dreams': I think to really be in tune with those areas of your life you have to be willing to 'listen' to that still small voice for you.....your heart......what is that saying......and then go after it with everything you have.....don't worry about the obstacles.....don't worry about the opinions for or against shared by others......what does your HEART say. I can say this.....you'll know.

What is so ironic for me is that I 'backed' into my 'Life Purpose/Dream' without even knowing it. I was in an operations position for Marriott when they needed someone from our region to be a 'District Safety Co-ordinator' and I was chosen. Reluctantly, like I needed one more thing on my plate work-wise, I flew up to Washington DC to be trained and that is where it happened. I watched one of Marriott's Corporate Trainers teach us and instantly I knew......'I COULD DO THAT!' I approached her at the break and asked her about opportunities in that field and found out that they were currently trying to fill a position in Marriott's corporate training department........I applied, got the job and have never looked back and never ever thought of being in another field or going in another direction.

I honestly found my 'Life Purpose' through NO design of my own........it is where my journey placed me and luckily enough I was open enough to that 'Still Small Voice, My Heart'.......when it said: Go ahead and Leap....and my friends, that is what I did and I have never regretted it.....ever! What does all this blabbering have to do with Nnadozie's question which was: speaking about clarity dreams and visions, what do you see, feel or observe before coming into conclusion that this my purpose in life, out of the millions of thoughts that goes through your mind?

I guess what I'm trying to say is there is no 'right or wrong' way to understand an individual's life purpose and dreams. Some have it revealed to them at an early age, others struggle for years but finally break through.....others simply aren't willing to ask enough tough personal and professional questions to peel the layers of the onion enough to get to their core....or for some if they get to that 'core'.....they end up being to afraid to 'LEAP' and go after it for a myriad of 'FEAR-BASED' reasons.

I think one of the keys.....is just being willing to be quiet and honestly wrestle with the above question and listen......just listen over and over again to your heart.....Get out in nature and talk, think.....but most of all be quiet, be still and listen....you will start to know and sense your purpose. Again, I believe when we learn to embrace trait #8 above, trusting and having 'Faith in God' then we will be embarking on a life-long journey of becoming the person we were intended to be.

I don't know if this helped at all but I look forward to hearing your thoughts and comments. Please join me on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Holland-Meads-Consulting/299612940256 and post your thoughts or email me at Holland@HollandMeads.com I do look forward to your comments and thoughts.......enjoy your journey......the ride is a hoot! I'll see you again on Wednesday.
Have a great week and as always, thanks for listening/reading and remember to:
